•    Chairman of the department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages, American University of Beirut.
•    Professor of Islamic thoght and Arabic literature, American University of Beirut.
•    Former Director of the Graduate Center for Middle Eastern Studies, American University of Beirut. Author of more than eighteen books on Islamic thought, Arabic literature, History, and Islamic art, in addition to a number of scholarly articles in specialized journals.
•    Honorary citizen of the City of Houston, Texas, and holder of the City’s Key.
•    Holder of the Arab Historian Order.Studied Arabic calligraphy under his father the famous calligrapher Sheikh Nassib Makarem.
•    In his paintings he has introduced the Arabic letter as a main element. Ith the Arabic letter’s movement,compliance, flexibility and receptivity he traverses in his  art work to different vistas of imagination, sentiments, emotions and feelings.
•    Hence the Arabic letter became in his paintings an aesthetic element rather than just a means for literal expression.
