Mohamed Omran

Painter · Syria
Mohamed Omran

Far removed from classical ideals of beauty, the figures in the work of Syrian artist Mohamad Omran reveal a more unsettling dimension of humanity—imperfect, vulnerable, and at times grotesque. His subjects carry the marks of lived experience, where the body becomes a site of tension, distortion, and raw psychological presence.

Born in Damascus in 1979, Omran graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University in 2000. He later pursued his postgraduate studies in France, earning both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Art History from the University of Lyon II. Working across sculpture, painting, and occasionally video, his practice consistently returns to the figure as a central motif—often depicting the human condition in states of strain, fragmentation, and emotional exposure.

Omran’s work navigates a charged emotional spectrum, capable of eliciting empathy, discomfort, anger, and even dark humour. His approach is marked by a sharp directness and a cynical edge, oscillating between violence and subtle irony, heaviness and unexpected lightness.

He has held solo exhibitions in Lyon, Paris, and Damascus, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions across France, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. His works are included in several private and public collections, notably the Royal Museum in Jordan and the British Museum in London.
